Pre-conference event on the evening of February 18

We advise early reservations. Please note that we are planning an event for the evening of the 18th, and that regular conference sessions begin early on the morning of the 19th.

The conference will be held at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, a luxury, historic, very beautiful hotel built in 1926. Reduced high winter season conference rates have been arranged per room, not per person, so you may wish to share a room. There is a group block for this conference at $299 -- the group code is 1891 and is under "Spanish in the US".

The closest and best option is the less expensive, co-owned and nearby David William Hotel. They provide a courtesy shuttle to the Biltmore and back. To receive the reduced conference rate, specify #2873, or ask for the "Spanish in the US Conference" or "FIU" when you make a reservation. Rates: $149 per room per night. The deadline to get this rate is January 5th, 2009.

Another option is the nearby Hotel St. Michel. No shuttle is available, so you will need to share cabs or try the Coral Gables Trolley. To make a reservation, email, or call 305-444-1666 and ask for reservations. Request the special room rate ($185 + tax standard room, $215 + tax suite) under the price code "SPA." Room rates include a small continental breakfast, fruit and newspapers delivered daily to the room, free wireless internet in each room, and free use of the computer center for guests without laptops.

Also available at a special conference rate is the budget hotel Ponce de Leon (website under construction). It is a small hotel over 80 years old and recently rennovated. It is located at 1721 Ponce de Leon Blvd. Inquire at the hotel about the Coral Gables Trolley, or share a cab to the Biltmore Hotel. Contact Stefania Cabrera at 305.562.6012 or 305.444.9934, or email Mention the Spanish in the US Conference. The rooms do not have central air/heat, but they are nice, clean rooms, with new carpet and bathrooms, and antique furniture. Rental rates range from $70 to $90.
